1.6 Teaching chemistry for deeper understanding

Description

This is a continuing activity that includes a university short course, action learning and reflective discussion groups, support from online mentoring and access to workplace coaching. A new cohort of teachers will increase and deepen their knowledge of:

  • new cutting edge areas of chemistry

  • conceptual development of big chemical ideas in a contextual framework

  • pedagogical content knowledge (application of general pedagogy to chemistry teaching)

  • approaches that challenge more able chemistry students.

  • As a result of the project, participants will increase and deepen their application of this knowledge to the teaching of chemistry in Stage 6 classes and become more involved in a network of chemistry teachers. The activity will be managed by a designated officer who will take responsibility for meeting the professional needs of teachers participating in the activity.

A component of the project will be a twenty six hour short course provided by a university.
