1.5 Supporting the teaching of grammar in K-6

Description

This is a continuing AGQTP activity. It is designed to provide support for teaching the grammar strand of the K-6 English syllabus by up-skilling teachers' knowledge of grammar using best-practice teaching and learning strategies within identified text types. The activity will be managed by a designated officer from the Catholic Education Office who will take responsibility for meeting the professional needs of a new cohort of teachers participating in the activity.

Assistance will be sought from the Australian Catholic University to design professional development sessions, present materials and mentor teachers.

Outcomes

Through participation in an AGQTP project, teachers will have strengthened the currency and depth of their learning area knowledge and understandings.
Through participation in an AGQTP project, teachers will have engaged productively in collegial networks that extend and support knowledge and skills.

Access

Teachers in rural locations, early career and experienced teachers.

Design

The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:


  • school-based projects that engage teachers in workplace learning based on cycles of continuous improvement

  • clusters of schools working in collegial networks

  • partnerships with professional associations and higher education institutions to provide expertise in the development, design and/or implementation of professional development activities.


This project builds on the AGQTP project based on a pilot concluded in 2006. The professional development model to be used in 2007 builds on needs and processes identified through the 2006 pilot program.

Implementation

The implementation of the activity will be supported by the following personnel: designated project officer (education consultant), academic partners and school-based professional learning teams.

Delivery

Workplace learning, workshops/course.

Timeline

By May 2007:


  • professional development day designed and delivered by the academic partner for representative teachers from participating schools

  • evaluation of the professional development day

  • submit progress report in May.


By November 2007:

  • writing of stage-specific, exemplar units of work within school networks, using best-practice teaching and learning strategies for a variety of text types

  • submit annual report in November.
