1.3 Literacy online
Description
This is a continuing AGQTP activity. Literacy Online is a suite of three related projects: Literacy Action Research Kit (LARK) Online, Early Literacy Online (ELO) and Literacy Online-Stage 2 (LOL2). LARK supports schools, K-12, in whole school literacy change. ELO supports Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 classroom teachers, and LOL2 supports Stage 2 classroom teachers. Literacy Online connects teachers' professional learning needs to a comprehensive action research change process focussed on improving student learning.
This professional learning is delivered in an online environment. The activity will be managed by a designated officer who will take responsibility for the activity meeting the professional needs of a new cohort of participating teachers. The designated officer will be supported by course mentors, exemplary classroom practitioners and curriculum leaders, who will support course participants online and at face-to-face course workshops.

Design
The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:
- school-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that is based on a cycle of continuous improvement model
- clusters of schools working in collegial networks
- flexible learning that includes components such as self-paced and facilitated online learning, face-to-face workshops, teleconferences, online mentors, and online collegial discussion groups
- regional workshops that enable participants to meet course organisers and online mentors, and to continue their collegial and professional learning dialogue face-to-face
- presentation by participants of a course work professional learning portfolio for evaluation and certification.
All three courses will undergo a revision process in Semester 2, 2006 to consider participant evaluations of content, delivery and materials and consequently ensure that the 2007 courses are responsive to the needs of schools and teachers and they are aligned with the requirements of the State Literacy Plan.
Literacy Online courses have been identified in the NSW State Literacy Plan 2006-2008 as one initiative in the provision of focused professional learning programs. It is an essential strategy in ensuring equitable access for primary and secondary teachers state-wide to literacy professional learning.
