3.19 Broken Bay pedagogy initiative

Description

The Catholic Schools Office (Diocese of Broken Bay) plans to provide structured and strategic opportunities for teams of teachers from all systemic schools to develop a deep understanding of the NSW model of pedagogy; and integrate this knowledge into teaching practice. Our strategic goal is to support quality teaching in classrooms across our Diocesan School System. A strategic emphasis on supporting quality pedagogy aligns with previous initiatives to maintain and extend capacity for educational excellence in our schools.

The activity will be managed by a designated officer who will take responsibility for the activity meeting the professional needs of teachers. This activity will initially involve input from University of Newcastle. Mentors and critical friends may be sourced from other tertiary institutions as the activity develops.

Design

The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:

  • school-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that is based on a cycle of continuous improvement model

  • clusters of schools working in collegial networks

  • workplace mentoring and coaching aligned to meeting the NSW Institute of Teachers' professional teaching standards

  • flexible learning that includes components such as self-paced and facilitated online learning, face-to-face workshops, video and teleconferences, online mentors, and discussion groups

  • local, regional and state workshops and conferences that enable participants to have their work publicly celebrated and critiqued

  • onsite and offsite participation in knowledge building and skill sharing activities;

  • partnerships for formal courses or awards

  • participation in formal courses or awards

  • partnerships with professional associations and higher education institutions to provide expertise in the development, design and/or implementation of professional development activities.

This is a continuing activity. It links to the NSW DET project Quality teaching, and has links with the national and state focus on teacher quality being the key contributing factor to student achievement.

The activity has been designed to respond to feedback obtained throughout 2006. Feedback indicates that most of our schools have now introduced the Quality Teaching framework. If the school leadership has decided against adopting this particular framework, an alternative learning framework has been developed to ensure a focus on pedagogy. Schools have communicated the need to further deepen and refine their understanding and implementation of effective pedagogy. The 2007 plan is designed to address this need.

Implementation

The implementation of the activity will be supported by a designated project officer working under the guidance of a steering committee, academic partners, school based professional learning teams and external providers as appropriate.
