3.11 Focus on learning (CEO)

Description

The Focus on Learning (CEO) 2007 project activity will continue a successful model of teacher professional learning conducted in the Parramatta diocese since 2003. The FOL (CEO) 2007 activity will involve CEO staff identifying educational trends in specific curriculum areas (including technology use across the curriculum) which require an up-skilling of teachers. The activity will be managed by a team of education officers who will take responsibility for identifying trends and meeting the professional needs of teachers participating in the activity.

At this stage of the planning process it is anticipated that there will be involvement by higher education institutions especially in the area of ensuring academic rigour to education officer conducted investigations.

Design

The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:

  • school-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that is based on a cycle of continuous improvement model

  • clusters of schools working in collegial networks

  • workplace mentoring and coaching aligned to meeting the NSW Institute of Teachers' professional teaching standards

  • flexible learning that includes components such as self-paced and facilitated online learning, face-to-face workshops, video and teleconferences, online mentors, and discussion groups

  • local, regional and state workshops and conferences that enable participants to have their work publicly celebrated and critiqued

  • onsite and offsite participation in knowledge building and skill sharing activities

  • partnerships with higher education institutions to provide expertise in the development and design of professional development activities.

The FOL (CEO) 2007 is a continuing activity from previous AGQTP activities 'FOL@Parra' in 2004, 'FOL-AGQTP@Parra' in 2005 and FOL (CEO) in 2006. Reviews completed by participants and the Australian Catholic University demonstrated that the model of by engaging participants in reflective practice is sound. Environmental scans completed by the diocese informed a new agenda during 2005 and 2006. The FOL (CEO) 2007 activity has a focus on using action-research where teachers investigate priority areas identified from educational trends by education officers. The project will be a major avenue for the achievement of identified diocesan goals and the Parramatta Diocesan Strategic Plan for 2006-9. The FOL (CEO) 2007 project supports diocesan and state priorities and the objectives of the AGQTP.

The implementation of the activity will be supported by a designated project officer, academic partner, system and school based professional learning teams.
