3.8 Developing lesson study paradigms in schools

Description

This is a continuing AGQTP activity. The project aims to have teachers improve their practice using the lesson study process. They will reflect, discuss with colleagues and deliver lessons again or observe a colleague delivering the lesson. Teachers, when surveyed, asked for assistance in dealing with a variety of learning needs in the classroom. They wanted to challenge all students and provide for the needs of the gifted and the student having difficulty.

The activity will be managed by an Education Consultant from the Catholic Education Office in Bathurst who will take responsibility for meeting the professional needs of teachers participating in the activity. Using the expertise of the staff of the Faculty of Education at the University of Newcastle, particularly Professor Jenny Gore and Ms Cheryl Williams, the project will be based on the Productive Pedagogies model developed by Fred Newmann, James Ladwig and Jenny Gore and will use a lesson study model.

Outcomes

Through participation in an AGQTP project, teachers will have strengthened the currency and depth of their pedagogical knowledge and skills.
Through participation in an AGQTP project, teachers will have applied professional standards to make judgements about the success of their practice and areas for future development.

Access

Experienced teachers to help them revitalise their practice, new teachers to provide good models of self-reflection.

Design

The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:

  • school-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that is based on a cycles of continuous improvement

  • clusters of schools working in collegial networks to share and critique their work

  • partnerships with professional associations and higher education institutions to provide expertise in the development, design and/or implementation of professional development activities

  • workplace mentoring and coaching by academic partners.

This is a continuing activity for the Wilcannia/Forbes diocese. It will involve three high schools and one primary school in 2007, building on the work in a central school (K-10) and a primary school in 2006. Feedback from the activity in 2006 demonstrated a need for incorporating Lesson study into the regular program for professional development, having release time allocated for preparation and delivery and follow up for the lessons.

Implementation

The implementation of the activity will be supported by the designated project officer, academic partners and school-based professional learning teams.

Delivery

Workplace learning, action learning project, workshops/course
