3.3 Leading quality professional learning

Description
This is a continuing activity to support teachers in NSW public schools to achieve accreditation of the NSW Institute of Teachers Professional Teaching Standards. Models of quality teacher professional learning aligned to the NSW Professional Teaching Standards aim to build the capacity of principals, supervisors and school-based professional learning teams to:
- support new scheme teachers to achieve and maintain accreditation at professional competence
- develop effective and collaborative supervision practice
- implement meaningful professional learning programs
- conduct rigorous evaluation of professional learning in order to determine impact.
Designated senior education officers will be responsible for supporting schools participating in the activity. It is anticipated that academic staff could assist with the development of workshops focused on data gathering, analysis and interpretation.

Outcomes
Through participation in this project, teachers will have applied professional standards to make judgements about the success of their practice and areas for future development.
Through participation in this project, teachers will have gained new knowledge and skills that contribute to a planned professional learning pathway.
Access
Targeted NSW Department of Education and Training teachers and per schools.
Design
The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:
- school-based projects that engage teachers in workplace learning using unit, lesson design and teaching review methodology
- clusters of schools working collegially
- workplace mentoring and coaching aligned to the Professional Teaching Standards and the Quality teaching model
- flexible learning that includes components such as self-paced and facilitated online learning, face-to-face workshops, video and teleconferences, online mentoring, action learning sets and discussion groups
- workshops and conferences that enable participants to have their work celebrated and critiqued publicly
- onsite and offsite participation in knowledge building and skill sharing activities.
Implementation
The implementation of the activity will be supported by the designated project officers, school-based professional learning teams, principals, school education directors and school development officers, and staff from Professional Learning and Leadership Directorate.

Timeline
By June 2008:
- support 58 schools across five regions
- implement evaluation plan
- conduct school-based and regional workshops for teachers and their supervisors in the targeted schools to implement and evaluate teacher professional learning aligned to the NSW Professional Teaching Standards and the Quality teaching model
- support collegial groups and networks
- expand online activities and resources to sustain school participation submit progress report.
By December 2008:
- support 58 schools across five regions
- implement evaluation plan
- conduct school-based and regional workshops for teachers and their supervisors in the targeted schools to implement and evaluate teacher professional learning aligned to the NSW Professional Teaching Standards and the Quality teaching model
- support collegial support groups and networks
- expand online activities and resources to support school participation
- submit third annual report.
