3.12 Focus on learning (Schools) 2008
Back |
Description
The Focus on learning (Schools) 2008 project activity will continue a successful model of teacher professional learning which has been conducted in the Parramatta diocese since 2003. This involves schools identifying areas of investigation as a result of the normal school review process and using an action research-based approach to progress identified issues.
The activity will be managed by a designated officer who will take responsibility for the activity meeting the professional needs of teachers. At this stage of the planning process it is anticipated that there will be involvement by higher education institutions especially in the area of ensuring academic rigour to teacher investigations.

Design
The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:
- school-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that is based on a cycle of continuous improvement model
- workplace mentoring and coaching aligned to meeting the NSW Institute of Teachers Professional Teaching Standards
- flexible learning that includes components such as self-paced and facilitated online learning, face-to-face workshops, video and teleconferences, online mentors, and discussion groups
- local, regional and state workshops and conferences that enable participants to have their work publicly celebrated and critiqued
- onsite and offsite participation in knowledge building and skill sharing activities
- partnerships with higher education institutions to provide expertise in the development and design of professional development activities.
With environmental scans completed by the diocese informing a new agenda during 2005, 2006 and 2007, the FOL (Schools) 2008 project will focus on using the action research method for teachers to investigate priority areas. The project will be a major avenue for the achievement of identified diocesan goals and the Parramatta Diocesan Strategic Plan for 2006-9 for Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme shows how the FOL (Schools) 2008 project supports diocesan and state priorities and the objectives of the Australian Government Quality Teaching Programme.

Project and participant data will be collected as part of the implementation of the activity. Participant surveys, using the outcomes measures for the activity, will be administered as part of the activitys evaluation strategy. The activity evaluation report will be generated through the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme NSW web site function. An online survey will be used to assess the strength of the FOL (Schools) 2008 project design in helping teachers investigate specified priority areas. This will be used to inform the design of the FOL (Schools) 2009 project.
