Description
This is a continuing activity. The activity is designed to meet the professional learning needs of teachers in the area of pedagogy. This activity will include an opportunity for schools to conduct action learning projects to develop their teachers' pedagogical content knowledge and skills. Participating teachers will be able to develop knowledge of pedagogy suited to the content of the subjects they teach. Schools may adopt a whole school approach to reviewing and implementing new pedagogical practices or target individual faculties or teachers. It is anticipated that a number of the projects will focus on the design and implementation of new programs and the trialling of new pedagogical strategies that are designed to support students meet the outcomes of the new Stage 6 mathematics syllabuses.
This activity will also enable schools or school clusters to support Australian Government Summer Schools Teacher Programme graduates to conduct school-based action learning projects. The projects will involve graduates providing professional learning, based on the Australian Government Summer Schools Teacher Programme courses, to colleagues and supporting their colleagues to implement knowledge and skills addressed in the courses.
The activity will be managed by a designated officer who will take responsibility for meeting the professional needs of teachers participating in the activity. At this stage of the planning process it is anticipated that there will be involvement by higher education institutions and external providers with specialist knowledge.

Outcomes
Through participation in an AGQTP project, teachers will have strengthened the currency and depth of their pedagogical knowledge and skills.

Design
The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:
- school-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that is based on a cycle of continuous improvement model
- flexible learning that includes components such as face-to-face workshops and discussion groups.
Feedback received from 2007 participants progress reports and the representatives of the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme independent sector reference group indicates that this activity meets the ongoing needs of schools and teachers that are planning and undertaking curriculum reviews and focussing on improving pedagogical practice in their school context.
Implementation
The implementation of the activity will be supported by the following personnel: designated project officer, sector consultants, school based professional learning team and external providers.

Timeline
By June 2008:
- all NSW independent schools will be offered the opportunity to apply to participate in this activity and successful applicants will have been identified
- schools that have teacher/s who graduated from the Australian Government Summer Schools Teacher Programme small grants will have been offered small grants to support the graduates to conduct action learning projects in their school
- participating schools will have commenced their work by putting processes and structures in place within their school to support classroom teachers in the implementation of quality pedagogy
- progress report submitted in June.
- participating schools will have completed the work identified in their applications to support Australian Government Summer Schools Teacher Programme graduates to share the knowledge and skills gained in the courses with other teachers in the implementation of quality pedagogy
- participating teachers and schools will have evaluated the efficacy of the processes and structures the school put in place to support teachers
- annual report submitted in November.
