3.23 Developing and sustaining leaders

Description
This is a continuing activity. The activity is designed to support teachers aspiring to and currently engaged in leadership roles within schools. The activity will include an opportunity for schools to undertake professional learning through action learning projects that use leadership skills, organisational support such as mentoring, the development and implementation of researched leadership frameworks, the development of school-based plans that support teachers to plan career paths that involve leadership within schools and the development of knowledge and understanding in the areas of curriculum leadership, teamwork, staff management and welfare.
The activity will be managed by a designated officer who will take responsibility for the activity meeting the professional needs of teachers. Schools undertaking action learning projects will be able to engage support from higher educational institutions and consultants with specialist knowledge.

Outcomes
Through participation in an AGQTP project, teachers will have engaged productively in collegial networks that extend and support knowledge and skills.
Through participation in an AGQTP project, teachers will have gained new knowledge and skills that contribute to a planned professional learning pathway.

Targeted Association of Independent Schools New South Wales schools/teachers.
Design
The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:
- school-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that is based on a cycle of continuous improvement model
- workplace mentoring and coaching aligned to meeting the NSW Institute of Teachers Professional Teaching Standards
- flexible learning that includes, face-to-face discussion groups.
This activity is a continuation of the 2007 activity for the NSW Independent sector. The positive response from teachers who have participated in the activity in 2007 together with the feedback provided by the academic who supported the school-based action learning teams will inform the structure of the orientation workshops in 2008.
Implementation
The implementation of the activity will be supported by the following personnel: designated project officer, sector consultants, school-based professional learning team, and external provider.

Timeline
By June 2008:
- schools will have been offered the opportunity to participate in action learning projects and successful schools will have commenced these projects
- the first workshop of the series for participants in the action learning projects will have been held
- progress report submitted in June.
- schools will have completed the action learning projects
- annual report submitted in November.
