Description

Teachers engaged in professional development learning of creative teaching strategies in Stage 6 Mathematics (General, Mathematics, Extension 1 and Extension 2), Stage 5 Mathematics (5.1, 5.2, 5.3), Stage 6 Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Senior Science) and Stage 5 Science. Teachers also engaged in a lesson study based on these and other teaching and learning strategies with an emphasis on using technology to deliver the lessons. The lesson study was communicated between the schools using a share point or other blogs.

The activity was managed from the Bathurst CEO with the support of a Task Group comprising of representatives from the systems four senior high schools. The activity was managed by the designated officer who took responsibility for the activity meeting the professional needs of the teachers.

Groups such as Teacher Training Australia, Society for the Provision of Education In Rural Australia (SPERA) and the various university personnel linked with SPERA delivered professional learning sessions in the subjects outlined above.

Include in the description of the activity:

  • A succinct statement describing how the activity is designed to meet teacher professional learning needs

  • Teacher professional learning needs were met through the provision of sessions based on good pedagogy that uses technology, and through forming collegial groups supported through technology links such as share point and blogs.

  • University personnel and other registered providers of Professional Development were contracted to run specific sessions as identified by the Diocesan Task Group.

    Design

    The professional learning strategy for this activity included:

  • School-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that included that is based on a cycle of continuous improvement model.

  • Clusters of schools connecting through collegial networks with an emphasis on pedagogy based on technology.

  • Flexible professional learning that includes components such as face-to-face workshops, video and teleconferences and discussion groups.

  • Partnerships with professional associations and higher education institutions to provide expertise in the development, design and/or implementation of professional development activities.
  • Implementation

    The implementation of the activity will be supported by the following personnel: designated project officers, academics partners, sector and regional consultants, school based professional learning team.

    Workplace learning, Online learning, Workshop/course, Resource Development, Seminar,
    On-line sharepoint or blog.

    Timeline

    By May 2009:

  • Professional Learning Activity based on teaching and learning strategies with an emphasis on technology

  • Collegial networks extended and lesson study process (planning, teaching reflecting) enacted

  • Regular contact made between schools regarding teaching and learning thorugh sharepoint or blogs

  • Progress report submitted in May.

  • By December 2009:
  • Collegial networks established using on-line mediums for selected groups with the faculty

  • Lesson study is extended through on-line discussions

  • Annual report submitted in December.
