3.03 Leading quality professional learning

Description
The aim of this activity was to support teachers in NSW public schools to achieve accreditation of the NSW Institute of Teachers professional teaching standards. Models of quality teacher professional learning aligned to the professional teaching standards aimed to build the capacity of principals, supervisors and school-based professional learning teams (PLTs) to:
- support New Scheme Teachers to achieve and maintain accreditation at professional competence
- develop effective and collaborative supervision practice
- implement meaningful professional learning programs
- conduct rigorous evaluation of professional learning in order to determine impact.
Schools will highlight development of Information Communication Technologies by integrating Element 1 (Standard 1.2.4) and Element 4 (Standard 4.2.5) into existing school plans. Designated senior education officers were responsible for supporting schools participating in the activity.

Outcomes
Through participation in this project, teachers will have applied professional standards to make judgements about the success of their practice and areas for future development.
Through participation in this project, teachers will have gained new knowledge and skills that contribute to a planned professional learning pathway.
Access
Targeted NSW Department of Education and Training teachers and per schools.
Design
The professional learning strategy for this activity included:
- school-based projects that engaged teachers in workplace learning using unit, lesson design and teaching review methodology
- community of schools working collegially
- workplace mentoring and coaching aligned to meeting the Professional Teaching Standards
- flexible learning that includes components such as self-paced and facilitated online learning, face-to-face workshops, video and teleconferences, online mentoring, action learning sets and discussion groups
- workshops and conferences that enabled participants to have their work celebrated and critiqued publicly
- onsite and offsite participation in knowledge building and skill sharing activities.
Implementation
The implementation of the activity was supported by designated project officers, school-based professional learning teams, principals, school education directors and school development officers, as well as staff from PL&LD Directorate.

Timeline
By May 2009:
- support 58 schools across five regions
- implement evaluation plan
- conduct school-based & regional workshops for teachers and their supervisors in the targeted schools to implement and evaluate teacher professional learning aligned to the NSW Professional Teaching Standards and the Quality teaching model
- support collegial groups and networks
- expand online activities and resources to sustain school participation
- submit progress report.
By November 2009:
- support 58 schools across five regions
- finalise evaluation
- conduct school-based & regional workshops for teachers and their supervisors in the targeted schools to implement and evaluate teacher professional learning aligned to the NSW Professional Teaching Standards and the Quality teaching model
- support collegial support groups and networks
- expand online activities and resources to support school participation
- submit annual report.
