Description
This is a continuing activity. It is designed to meet the professional learning of new scheme teachers and highly experienced teachers by providing opportunities, through action learning projects, for these teachers to achieve accreditation through the NSW Institute of Teachers.
New scheme teachers will work with their supervisors to achieve the standards of Professional Competence. Highly experienced teachers will mentor and support their colleagues and thereby work towards meeting the standards for Professional Accomplishment and Professional Leadership. This activity will include:
- support for teachers undertaking accreditation processes through participating in professional development workshops
- the opportunity for schools to conduct action learning projects that support teachers participating in an accreditation process, their colleagues and supervisors.

Design
The professional learning strategy for this activity includes:
- school-based projects to engage teachers in workplace learning that is based on a cycle of continuous improvement model
- workplace mentoring and coaching aligned to meeting the NSW Institute of Teachers' professional teaching standards
- flexible learning that includes components such as face-to-face workshops and discussion groups
- workshops that enable participants to have their work publicly celebrated and critiqued
- onsite and offsite participation in knowledge building and skill sharing activities
This activity, supporting the implementation of the NSW professional teaching standards, is a continuation of the activity commenced in 2006, continued in 2007 and 2008, and is linked to the NSW initiative of supporting teachers to achieve professional teaching standards.
Feedback received from participants indicated that action learning projects and professional development workshops have been effective in supporting teachers participating in accreditation through the NSW Institute of Teachers. Feedback obtained from teachers who have participated in workshop and school-based action learning projects together with information provided by the NSW Institute of Teachers will inform the workshop content in 2009.
Implementation
The activity will be managed by a designated officer(s) who will take responsibility for meeting the professional needs of teachers participating in the activity.

Timeline
By May 2009:
- all NSW independent schools will be offered the opportunity to apply to participate in the school based action learning component of the activity and successful applicants will have been identified
- participating schools will have commenced their work by completing professional development orientation activities and putting processes and structures in place within their school to support teachers participating in accreditation processes
- professional development workshops will have been offered to all teachers in the NSW Independent sector and some workshops will have been completed
- progress report submitted in May.
By November 2009:
- participating schools will have completed the work identified in their applications to teachers participating in accreditation processed
- participating teachers and where appropriate mentors and/or supervisors will have evaluated the efficacy of the processes and structures the school put in place to support the teachers achieve the professional teachers
- annual report submitted in November.
