Learning experience:
Artists and art forms. Drawing, painting, sculpture

Context:

Students view an object, in this case an apple. They are asked to draw an apple, paint a picture of an apple and complete a sculpture of an apple. Each student is then asked to speak about their artworks by; identifying each method and the equipment used to make it, discuss the techniques  utilised and express an opinion as to which artwork they prefer and why.

Outcomes:

VAES1.1 Makes simple pictures and other kinds of artworks about things and experiences

VAES1.2 Experiments with a range of media in selected forms

VAES1.3 Recognises some of the qualities of different artworks and begins to realise that artists make artworks

VAES1.4 Communicates their ideas about pictures and other kinds of artworks

Assessment strategy:

The teacher:

  • questions students during appreciation and making activities
  • observes students making artworks

Assessment criteria:

The student:

  • distinguishes a drawing from a painting or sculpture and talks about the different materials artists use
  • shows preferences for particular artworks and gives reasons for their choices (feelings, colours, subject matter, associations)
  • talks about features within their artworks
  • explores the different qualities of different media to make a drawing, painting and a sculpture.
